She directed the feature film The Secret Life of Bees, which was based on Sue Monk Kidd’s best-selling novel. It was released in October 2008 by Fox Searchlight and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Urbanworld Film Festival the same year. Beyond the Lights was based on Nina Simone’s song “Blackbird” from the album Nina Simone with Strings, and was originally titled Blackbird.
The story of the main character was based on the lives of Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland. Prince enlisted the help of a number of musicians, such as Alicia Keys, to conduct research. The story was also influenced by an encounter with Keys when he was performing the song “Diary.” The film’s sexualization of female pop singers, in particular, serves as a “critique of American media culture.”
Prince is currently directing the TriStar Pictures epic The Woman King, which is based on true events in the Kingdom, the general of the Amazons, an all-female military force, and her daughter, Nawi, as they battle the French and neighboring tribes who have abused their dignity, enslaved their people, and tried to kill everything they have worked for.
