Harry started his career in Denver, Colorado, radio stations KHOW and KIMN and Cincinnati, Ohio, radio station WLW (1973–81). From 1981 to 1982 he worked at KRMA-TV. Smith served as a reporter and anchor for KMGH-TV News Station From 1982 to 1985.

He has also been the Contributor for CBS Evening News with his teammate Dan Rather for 48 Hours for 13 years. Smith also served as a co-anchor of CBS This Morning. On October 28, 2002, he also returned to the CBS morning show, by that point he had renamed The Early Show. He has also hosted the program for eight years before CBS announced that Harry and fellow co-anchors Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price would leave the show at the end of 2010. His final day on the show was December 31, 2010.

CBS News also informed its employees that Smith would depart the network after twenty-five years In July 8, 2011, NBC News announced that he would join that network and contribute to the prime-time newsmagazine program Rock Center with Brian Williams.

Since the canceling of Rock Center with Brian Williams, Smith has continued to report regularly on various NBC News platforms and substitute anchor on NBC Nightly News. He contributes a weekly story on Sunday mornings on the weekend edition of NBC’s Today in a segment called “Sundays with Harry”.

In the fall of 2015, the Journalist began regularly filling in as co-host on the weekend edition of NBC’s Today alongside his former colleague from The Early Show, Erica Hill. He is also a part of a rotating group of co-hosts that have been filling the co-anchor chair since it was vacated by Lester Holt when he was named anchor of NBC Nightly News.
