Mond began his freshman year at Texas A&M as a backup to Nick Starkel, but after Starkel was injured in the first game of the season against the UCLA Bruins, he took over as the starter. He completed 12-of-21 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. Prior to Texas A&M’s first game of the NCAA 2018-2019 season, Jimbo Fisher, who succeeded Kevin Sumlin as head coach, revealed that Kellen Mond would be the starting quarterback for the season opener.
Mond’s goals were higher heading into the 2019 season, but his overall results fell short. Although his pass completion rate increased, his overall yardage and yards-per-attempt decreased marginally. However, he was able to progress in 2020, setting career highs in pass completion percentage and yards-per-attempt. The Aggies went 9–1 in 2020 and finished fourth in the final AP Poll.
