James made his television debut in a two-season recurring appearance on the long-running Canadian teen drama Degrassi. Following his departure from Degrassi, he appeared in a number of TV shows, such as How To Be Indie, Clue, and My Babysitter’s a Vampire in 2011, and The Listener and The LA Complex in 2012. He also had a supporting part in the ABC Family made-for-TV film 12 in 2011.
James landed his first major feature film appearance in the Canadian film Home Again, in which he played a Jamaican deportee, opposite Tatyana Ali and Fefe Dobson. Despite the mixed reviews for the film, The Globe and Mail praised James’ performance, calling it “heartbreaking.” At the 1st Canadian Screen Awards, he earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
James replaced Star Wars actor John Boyega in the lead role of African-American track and field sprinter Jesse Owens in the biopic Race in 2016, opposite Jason Sudeikis. He won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor for his performance in Race. In the FOX limited series Shots Fired, James portrayed DOJ prosecutor Preston Terry.
